Mount Putuo is part of Zhoushan archipelago and was formed about 150 million years ago. Over time, due to the movement of the earth, glacier impacts and marine effects, complex geological formations have taken shape on the islands. Today, Mount Putuo has exhibitions of 5 layer marine carved platforms and 3 layer marine deposit platforms. On the island, features such as bays, sand beaches, cobble beaches, mud beaches, marine caves, marine carved chasms, marine carved cliffs, platforms, natural bridges and reefs can also be found. |

Marine caves are carved by the ocean's waves and are ocean-facing. Some of these caves are tens of meters deep. With further erosion, the caves will become chasms.

Caoyin cave |

This cave was eroded from a granite rock by the ocean waves which created natural cracks, over time, these cracks formed the cave. Even more interesting is after the cave was formed, the waves and the compressed air pressured the ceiling of the cave and eventually broke part of the ceiling creating a natural skylight and bridge.
